FAQ

Frequently asked questions about our vehicles

What is Thula and who do you work with?

Thula designs and builds fully electric safari vehicles (ESV) and electric boats (eBoats) for lodges, conservancies and safari operators. Our platforms are purpose-built to deliver immersive guest experiences while reducing environmental impact and long-term operating costs.

How does the Electric Safari Vehicle enhance the safari experience?

The ESV is engineered specifically for the African bush. Its fully electric drivetrain delivers silent operation, instant torque and a low centre of gravity for confident performance across demanding terrain. Independent suspension ensures ride comfort while reducing vibration. Without engine noise or diesel fumes, wildlife remains undisturbed and guests experience a deeper connection to their surroundings. This is not a converted diesel platform. It is purpose-built electric from the ground up. The vehicle is being homologated and will be fully roadworthy and compliant with applicable regulations.

What is the range and energy consumption of the ESV?

The ESV delivers up to 200 km per charge under normal operating conditions. Energy consumption averages approximately 30 kWh per 100 km. Many lodges integrate solar infrastructure to significantly reduce or offset charging costs.

What does the ESV cost and what is included?

The ESV is available through a preferred rental model at approximately R34 000 per month, including scheduled maintenance and vehicle monitoring through Thula Cloud. For operators who prefer outright ownership, the ESV is priced at R1 750 000 ex VAT. The base vehicle includes a 9-seat rear configuration as standard, with a range of optional features and custom configurations available to suit your lodge’s operational and brand requirements.

How is charging handled?

Each vehicle includes a standard charging solution. We size and recommend charging infrastructure based on your daily distance, turnaround windows and available power supply. Solar integration is common in remote lodge environments and allows for highly cost-efficient operation.

What are the servicing requirements?

Electric drivetrains significantly reduce mechanical complexity compared to traditional diesel vehicles. There are no gearboxes, clutches, exhaust systems or complex engine components to maintain. The electric motors require a simple oil service at 10 000 km and thereafter at extended 60 000 km intervals. Brake systems are serviced alongside scheduled maintenance. Fewer moving parts and simplified systems result in longer service intervals, reduced downtime and lower long-term servicing costs.

What is the battery lifespan?

The battery carries a 5-year / 3 000-cycle warranty. 3 000 cycles equates to approximately 600 000 km of use. At that stage, the battery is expected to retain around 80 percent of its original capacity.

What about the electric boats?

Our eBoats use fully electric propulsion systems and can be configured with a range of motor and battery options to suit different waterways, guest capacities and operating profiles. Solar integration can serve as the primary power source, enabling fully off-grid and energy-independent operation. Up to 5 kW AC onboard power is available for guest amenities, and each boat is tailored to the lodge’s operational requirements.

Do you provide fleet monitoring and sustainability reporting?

Yes. Thula Cloud enables operators to monitor vehicle performance, track routes, analyse energy consumption and measure sustainability impact across their fleet.
